I found this to be a relatively unselfconscious autobiography of an important player in the Ebola and HIV/Aids epidemics. While the science of virology is touched on relatively lightly, for me the real importance and most troubling message of the book lies in its revelation of the difficulties faced in getting a rational transnational response to one of mankind's most serious transnational problems. I enjoyed reading this book and have since thought about it a lot. It was not a difficult read and I would recommend it to anyone interested in medicine, medical history or politics. Those interested in the standing of science in governance or the status of women and minorities in societies will also gain from reading this book.Product details

Excellent historical perspective of an increasing threat. One cannot help but admire the courage of those who have followed and treated this disease from its first known outbreak. The author is clear, knowledgeable and interesting in writing this book. I found it refreshing that he also is humble enough to admit his mistakes while apprising us of the dangers of this virus. Well done!
Found it interesting but felt Hot Zone is a better book if you are interesting in research into diseases.
Book bogs down with meetings and politics which really necessary to understand the situation of how research is done and fact that many people die while egos, etc. take precedence.
In many ways really sad in that just shows money, egos, etc. seem to take precedence over human life.
A straight forward account of one man's devotion to battling the worst viral epidemics of our time. As Piot employs both science and politics in his struggle to find workable ways to reduce the devastation of ebola and HIV explosions, he proves once again that life can be an adventure. He also demonstrates that public policy doesn't have to be void of compassion for the victims. You'll find yourself better informed to deal with these health issues that continue to threaten our world and our lives.
Stopped reading halfway through. I started reading the book because of the Ebola and AIDS connection - interested in what it is like to work in virology with these emerging diseases. It seems to me that the first few chapters were about Ebola but then the book shifted to politics...who gets credit for what discoveries. After rading far longer than I had wished it seemed that the book shifted to an expanded version if "I when and did this, I worked with this person, they are [ego driven, nice, competent, etc] then I went and did that". At some point I realized that I had read the word "I" about 100 times too many and put the book down.
My impression of public health from reading this book is that it is a awful lot about egos and not as much about helping sick people.
This book alternately chilling, breathtaking, uplifting, depressing and astonishing. Peter Piot is probably the 'good-est person to ever live. His decency and humanity are quite touching...and seem almost impossibly naive to this cynical age. Africa and the world owes him a great deal. Blessings on him and his posterity.
Peter Piot (and anyone working on HIV/AIDS or Ebola) is my hero. The book led me to a real appreciation of the skill and courage it takes to be on the frontlines in those wars. The author's experiences are fascinating to read. The second half of the book dealt with the international bureaucracies with which Piot had to work. Having spent 42 years as a bureaucrat I must admit I skimmed much of this, but it's interesting to realize what is going on behind the frontlines as well.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone/everyone as the interconnectedness of our world demands an understanding of how vulnerable we are to rapidly spreading diseases and how difficult it s to combat them. In an age when tried and true antibiotics are beginning to fail us and diseases can spread from one part of the world to any other in a matter of hours, this situation is likely more of a threat to our personal security than war and terrorism.
as a doctor, i can only say that i am extremely pleased and happy that there are these field researchers who will track down the source of a viral outbreak and devote their lives and health to doing so. this is an important book and should be read by anyone interested in how epidemics emerge, how they are treated, how they are identified and how researchers are finding answers that will help us to fight these little viral demons as they begin to affect more and more people. The more you know about these frontline medical professionals, the more you will understand the process of epidemiology and how we can not only fight epidemics, but prevent them and keep populations safe. we owe Dr. Piot and other researchers and epidemiologists a debt we will never be able to repay.
