Robot Dreams Sara Varon Books
This story took me by surprise. With no words and written for children I thought it would be mildly amusing to sort through. It turned out wonderfully. The basic storyline is this. Lonely dog buys and assembles robot, robot and dog become best friends, and then one day their friendship unexpectedly ends and they are then forced to move on with their lives. The book chronicles the two of them making this happen. They each find happiness but neither is forgotten in the heart of the other. This is shown in a heartbreaking way and I cried after reading this book. ( a lot!) It's currently one of my favorites. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.Tags : Amazon.com: Robot Dreams (9781596431089): Sara Varon: Books,Sara Varon,Robot Dreams,First Second,1596431083,Comics & Graphic Novels - General,Fantasy - General,Cartoons and comics,Comic books, strips, etc,Dogs,Dogs;Fiction.,Friendship,Friendship;Fiction.,Robots,Robots;Fiction.,Stories without words,138501 First Second-Graphic Novels,COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS Science Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Fiction,Graphic novels,JUVENILE FICTION Comics & Graphic Novels Science Fiction,Science Fiction,Social Themes Friendship,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Comics & Graphic Novels General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,Best childrens graphic novels; best kids graphic novels; Kirkus best books; publishers weekly best books; notable childrens books; Kids robot books; robot books for kids; childrens robot books; robot books for children; kids books about robots; childrens books about robots; Childrens science fiction graphic novels; childrens science fiction comics; kids science fiction graphic novels; kids science fiction comics; childrens sci fi graphic novels; kids sci fi comics; science fiction graphic novels for kids; science fiction graphic novels for children; science fiction comics for kids; science fiction comics for children
Robot Dreams Sara Varon Books Reviews
Cute comic , arrived in good condition
This is such a great book for children ranging from two years old through reading ages. The story is not at all shallow and beautifully illustrates the complexity and transitory nature of some relationships. Children reading the book with adults can tell what's going on, and because of the excellent illustrations, "read" the book to the adult.
Great book, glad I bought it, maybe a little melancholy, but if you read a book and give it a little thought.....
This is a perfect graphic novel. A masterpiece, if you will. I wish it were not categorized merely as YA, because there is so much wisdom, pain and understanding, people 8 to 100 will derive meaning according to their own experiences. The humor and pain is balanced on a knife edge. The drawings are loose, natural and cohesive. The "sweetness" of the art heightens the pain. I wish I had done this one myself.
One of the readers, a mothers who gave this book a 3-star review, because her young son wept inconsolably at the end is not as smart as her 8 year-old. He got it.
Thanks, Ms. Varon. We look forward to more of your brilliant perceptions on life.
Narrative Literacy in a Poetic book. This teaches narrative without literacy. It's great not only for kids who don't read fluently yet — to build their confidence and make them love books — but also for kids who already know how to read. They can investigate narrative cause and effect from one picture to the next.
Add my 5 stars to all the others here! I first came across Sarah Varon's work through her slim volume "Sweaterweather," and immediately recognized her remarkable gift as a comics artist. But as delightful as that first collection was, this is absolutely wonderful. All-ages in the best sense of the word, adults will enjoy this nearly wordless graphic novel as much as children -- but any child should embrace it wholeheartedly.
On the surface it's a story about a dog & his robot friend, filled with expressive faces & often funny situations. But it's far more than that, heading into bittersweet, thoughtful territory that explores the nature of friendship. Both Dog & Robot grow quite a bit by the time we reach the final pages, and they're both better for it. It's a truly sweet story, without ever becoming maudlin or cloying.
Sometimes I despair about the condition of the modern world ... then a small jewel like this comes along, reassuring me that there's more than bad news to life. A perfect book for any child ... but don't hesitate to buy a copy for yourself!
I adore this for something bitter-sweet, innocent yet not naïve, dreamy and evocative, but still concrete with an concrete plot to follow for children (high school too!). There's a dog, a Robot, a series of missed opportunities at friendship, loneliness and loss, but after all is and done--love. Don't we all dream of love and acceptance? Even robots.
