“Neal’s female leads are strong, fierce, independent and fabulous although rough around the edges. She writes with such exquisite detail...immersing you into the island surroundings as though you are there. Exhilarating, suspenseful, thrilling, fast paced, action packed, easy flow, engaging, immersive, vulnerable, and scintillating.” ~F. Thorn, reviewer
Wired Hard Paradise Crime Book 3 edition by Toby Neal Literature Fiction eBooks
Sophie Ang is an interesting crime-fighting portrait whose story I thoroughly enjoyed. A former FBI agent, now in private security, she lives in the highly international yet fiercely local milieu of the Hawaiian Islands. She communicates in English but swears in Thai. Not getting jokes in English (because she misses so many idioms and expressions) makes relationships more difficult for Sophie, as if she didn't have trouble enough, with a stalker ex-husband whose violent streak is legendary. I found myself rooting for Sophie yet I also felt a certain distance from her.The conflict starts quickly in the first page or two and builds throughout the book, taking the reader on some unexpected twists and turns involving historical Hawaiian artifacts valuable enough to kill, and die, for. Teaming up with her Detective friend Lei Texeira of the Maui Police Department, Sophie goes after the baddies, uncovering one surprise after another. I only wished her love life were a tad more resolved by the end of this romp, but perhaps that is meant to happen in the next book in the series.
As mentioned, I thoroughly enjoyed my brief trip to the criminal neighborhoods of Maui, and recommend this book to anyone looking for a satisfying mystery under the ornamental palms.

Wired Hard Paradise Crime Book 3 edition by Toby Neal Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book has all the elements of popular bodice-rippers - the heroine torn between multiple men, doubting herself, finally realizing her true love. But it also works very well as a crime thriller. The author’s heroine is extremely well drawn, the stereotypical strong woman without being in any specific way stereotypical. She is unique and very interesting. In fact, it’s been a long time since I’ve encountered a protagonist I’ve liked this much. Her idiosyncrasies are quite interesting as they reveal her backstory, giving her strengths and weaknesses. When she gets put in a couple bad situations, one is inexplicable but easily overlooked as a story element and the other is completely believable.
I’m not a fan of love stories in general and bodice-rippers in particular, but luckily the book works surprisingly well as a crime thriller as well. The action is not exactly continuous - this is more procedural and character-driven than action-driven - but one won’t get bored. The plot twists in particular are done extremely well. Honestly, although the romance elements were a bit tedious for me there’s nothing at all that isn’t well done in this book.
I was extremely conscious throughout of reading a female-written book, which is unusual for me, so I was quite surprised to see the author’s name as Toby Neal. Turns out that Toby is a pretty lady. However, if you like crime thrillers, and especially if you like them with a woman’s flavor, I highly recommend this book. I got it free as a BookBub selection as crime thrillers aren’t really my favorite genre, but I wouldn’t have been disappointed had I picked it up for $8 at a news stand. It’s just a well written book.
I love Toby Neal's imagination and her way of telling a great story is superb! She sets the stage and then it blossoms like crazy. Lots of action scenes, a bit of angst in our heroine, her confused feelings, the good looking men who slaver over her, and all the bit characters just make for a superb read. I also like the way she has started to have the characters do a review of the case. It helps me keep things straight and makes it easier to absorb the entire story.
Love, love, love this series!
Sophie Ang is working nightwatch security on a historical site where a queen is believed to be buried. Her biggest challenge is staying awake, and it leaves her questioning her decision to leave the FBI. But a dead body and a mystery to solve soon have her working with Lei and Pono again, while she tries to resolve her internal dilemmas about life and love. The series has been very hard on Sophie and the men close to her. This book is no exception.
Love that Sophie! I love all of Toby Neal's books. I am a big fan of The Lei Crime Series, and of all of the details about Hawaii life. There is mystery, drama, and love in these stories about Sophie's complicated life and her insecurities. She is trying to find herself and also love, these are difficult for her, with her background and past abusive marriage. Just when you think things are going well, surprises happen. She keeps you on your toes, and always wondering what's next? Now, I really can't wait for the next book. Don't keep me waiting too long. This is the 3rd book in the series and each one was great! It is best to read them in order thought to get the best out of them. (my opinion)
typical toby neal. easy read. can't put it down. I love reading her books while in the islands as there are a lot of local references and the reader feels right there. My only criticism is that the main character just keeps getting into serious trouble, suffering horrible injuries over and over again in a short expanse of time. She should get out of that profession! A little unrealistic.
