Breath and Bone Valen Book 2 Carol Berg 9780451461865 Books
First of all, let me say that this book is the 2nd half of a 2 book novel. Please don't read this before Flesh and Spirit. That being said, this was a brilliant ending to the story begun in the previous book.I once read a quote from a fantasy writer that said writing fantasy was extremely difficult because the writer needs to follow all the rules (great characters, great plot, etc) of other genres, plus the writer needs to completely create a new world with its own rules and functions. Carol Berg succeeded on both levels. The world she created - the Harrowers, the sorcerers and the Danae, all fit into the book well and made sense. The plot was both involved and exciting. Once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down. What really set this book apart though was the characters. Almost all of the characters, just like real people, were shades of grey rather than "good guys and bad guys". Valen, an addict who spent most of his life running from the restrictions of his society, definitely doesn't fall into either the hero or the anti-hero category. Likewise, Osriel and Sila Diaglou both believe they are acting in the best interest of the world. Both are willing to do evil things to accomplish the best results. Valen's family also was multi-faceted.
Overall, I loved this book. The book left enough loose ends to stir the imagination (I'd love to see if Valen ever married the doctor or reconciled with his family) but it ended the story at exactly the right place. I immediately downloaded samples of every other book by this Author in the Kindle store.

Breath and Bone Valen Book 2 Carol Berg 9780451461865 Books Reviews
I thought the first book in this two-book series, Flesh and Spirit, was one of the most amazing books I had ever read. This one surpassed it. Berg's writing is a revelation. She takes you so deeply into the world she has created, and into the mind of her protagonist, that by the time you are able to tear yourself away from the pages, you are astonished to find yourself back in mundane reality.
Breath and Bone is well written, captivating and magical. I recommend it highly.
What a wonderful find this book and its predecessor were. I feel so lucky that I happened upon this duology at a book store one night, as it has now catapulted to a place among my very favorites -- and not just in fantasy, either.
Breath and Bone is even better than Flesh and Spirit, more evenly paced and delving much more into the mythological beauty of the Danae that was introduced in the first book. And yet what captivated me in that book permeates this one as well, and perhaps takes a more intense, higher flight the mature and creative writing, the emotional imagery, the settings that speak of seclusion or natural grace, the unique and complex characters... they all combine to create a world and story that seem effortlessly realistic, filled with a depth and loveliness that I have rarely come across.
The development of the relationships between Valen and other characters, most notably Osriel, Kol and Saverian, is a profound experience. Valen truly comes into his own in Breath and Bone. His loyalty to his friends and his beliefs become firmly rooted, and his journey of self-discovery is a joy to behold. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is really difficult to be more specific about his growth or the plot without giving anything away, but I will concur that there certainly are some surprises, along with revelations that you may have eagerly guessed beforehand.
All in all, just a gorgeous book. If I had any complaints, it would be that I wished the aftermath of the climax had been a little longer and more descriptive. And I was looking forward to the reappearance of a couple of characters from Flesh and Spirit, but we didn't get to meet them again in this book. But I think the introduction of other strong characters makes up for that. I'm hopeful there will be another book in the future, as there were a few small loose ends left dangling, and I do feel like I need another book to recover from my grief over having to leave this special, distinctive world.
I love this author's writing, and Valen continues to be an amazing character. Definitely not your run of the mill, rock-jawed hero, which is a plus as far as I'm concerned. The only flaw from my perspective is that Berg is a bit slow to launch us into the main conflict. There's a lot of set up at the beginning. She picks up momentum as as the story progresses. Sticking with the novel is definitely worthwhile.
It's hard to find fantasy works that feel new and fresh, but next to shelves of elves and vampires, Carol Berg delivers a wholly satisfying experience in her Lighthouse saga. The world she built is rich and complex with hints of history, culture, and divisions that deliver. Her characters' motivations are understandable. The choices they have to make fit the logic of the world. She works her story so well that no part seems forced.
I really liked this book. I loved the world and the system of magic and I especially like Osriel. I liked the physician and that whole thing. The one thing that I would have liked is if his 'drug use' was better described and put into the story. But I loved the danae and the dance. It was really cool. Some of it was pretty predictable, which was kind of annoying. Sometimes the descriptions got to be a little much, I found myself skipping over some of the action sequences. I think this book would have been helped by less description of the action of the characters and more description of the what the characters were thinking and whatnot. I really liked the settings and the maps and the descriptions of when he uses his magic to find a person or location though. This book has some flaws, but I think overall it is a beautiful book.
A Nice book with lots of surprising Twist and turns. main character found salvation and was reformed as a better person. It was rather limited since it was written from a first person point of view, i would have loved to have a better understanding of the world carol berg has created. perhaps, i am rather sensitive but i find the character and dialogues within rather too descriptive and vulgar. Find myself skipping scenes (tortures, gruesome deaths, etc.)
